About the place

What Bhuj feels like

Bhuj is the dusty, busy, easy-going capital of Kutch — a city of traders and artisans where every second lane has a workshop and almost every conversation somehow ends with someone telling you about their village. The 2001 earthquake destroyed much of the old town and killed more than 12,000 people; the rebuilding that followed has been one of India's most thoughtful heritage restorations.

Don't come for glamour. Come for the Prag Mahal tower, the mirrored Aina Mahal, Kutchi silversmiths in the old lanes, and as a launchpad to Bhujodi's weaving village, the leather artists of Hodka, the mirror workers of Bhirandiyara and the white desert at the end of the road.

Top attractions

What to see in & around Bhuj

A compact list of what to prioritise — we’ve grouped by walking-distance sights and easy half-day trips.

Prag Mahal palace tower

Prag Mahal

Faux-Italian Gothic palace from the 1860s — follow the clock tower up stone stairs to a rooftop view over the city.

Kutchi artisan

Aina Mahal & Rao Lakhaji Museum

A 18th-century royal palace interior clad in mirrors and glass — one of India's most eccentric museum rooms.

Smritivan earthquake memorial

Smritivan Earthquake Memorial

A 130-acre terraced memorial on Bhujia Hill — dedicated to those lost in the 2001 quake, with thoughtful museum halls and city views.

Kutchi embroidery

Kutch Museum

India's oldest museum (1877) — Kshatriya armour, Kutchi embroidery, ancient coins and Paleolithic tools.

Rann Utsav festival tents

Bhujodi & Hodka (villages)

Bhujodi is a 15-min drive for hand-loom shawls. Hodka (90 min) is a traditional bhungas village with mirror-work artists. Don't skip the lunches.

Shipyard at Mandvi

Day trip: Mandvi

60 km southwest — traditional dhow shipyards, Vijay Vilas Palace and a clean, quiet beach. Half-day is enough.

Things to do

Beyond sightseeing

  • Take a guided village walk through Bhujodi — meet a real weaver and watch him tie 500 warp threads by hand before lunch.
  • Spend an evening in the old town eating at Prince restaurant (legendary local kitchen) and then walking up to Hamirsar lake.
  • Take an early-morning heritage walk organised by the Bhujjali community — they show you the city's bhungas and bird-calls with the same humour they use to describe the rebuilding.
  • If you have time: drive 2 hours to the Dholavira UNESCO Harappan site — see how a 4500-year-old city managed its water.
  • Try the local Kutchi thali at Annapurna or Zorba the Buddha — dhabeli, dabeli-rotla and bajra no rotlo are essentials.
