What to see

Kirti Mandir and a bridge named Sudama

Kirti Mandir, Gandhi's birthplace memorial, sits in the heart of the old town. The three-storey memorial is built on the exact location of his house — one wing walls the original dwelling is preserved. Within, an excellent museum chronicles his life; you can also peer into his original house through a window.

Then walk south along the seafront for Sudama Setu, a 460-m suspension footbridge over the sea inlet named after Krishna's childhood friend. Time it for sunset — the silhouette across the water is stunning. The coast at this end of Porbandar is quiet, clean and flat.

Don't leave town without trying the local seafood — Porbandar is known for its grilled fish and crab dishes (though Gujarati and Jain veg options are abundant for those who prefer).
