Rajkot — gateway to the whole of Saurashtra
A working city rather than a tourist one — which is exactly why it's perfect as a base. The airport is the most reliable in the region; the museums are surprisingly good; and it's at a central driving distance from almost everything worth seeing on the peninsula.

A working city with great museums
Rajkot is one of the cleanest and most livable "second-tier" cities in India — with a small but excellent museum scene:
Watson Museum — heritage, ethnography and a quirky collection of paintings and torans. Rotary Dolls Museum — thousands of dolls in every possible costume, a favourite with families. Lang library — a beautiful colonial Raj building doubling as the post office. The bazaars: Bedi Gate, Soni Gate, Moti Tanki Chowk all have a different feel.
